Sunbury Boy 4 Meets Death in Street Mishap.
Richard J. Bostian Jr., four son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Bostian 1130 East Chestnut Street, died Saturday afternoon of a fractured skull sustained when he was struck
by a station wagon on East Market Street.
The child was dead on arrival at Community Hospital at 12:45 o'clock.
Dr. Henry F. Ulrich, Sunbury, coroner of Northumberland county said the boy suffered an intracraniel hemorrhage and other injuries.
The coroner said there will be no inquest and that he was satisfied that death was the result of an unavoidable accident.
City police said that no charges have been lodged against,
the driver of the vehicle Robert H. Wolfington of New Buffalo.
Sgt. Marion Sprinkle, who investigated the accident, said that Wolfington was traveling east on Market street when the Bostian child suddenly dashed in front of his vehicle.
Wolfington said he saw the child but not in time to avoid striking him.
The accident occurred approximately 78 feet from the intersection
of N. Twelfth and Market Streets.
Sgt. Sprinkle said that tired marks on the street,
indicated that Wolfington skidded for a distance of 45 feet before his vehicle struck the child. The front bumper of the vehicle struck the boys left leg and the impact threw the child in the air. The station wagon continued forward for about 40 feet and the victim rolled some distance to the intersection.
Sgt. Sprinkle said the Bostian child attempted to cross from the south to the north side of the street where a playmate had gone.
H. H. Heintzelman. of Hamilton told police he was operating a truck a short distance in front of Wolfington and that when he heard the station wagon skid he looked back and saw the child being struck.
Mrs. James Shriver, 1114 East Market Street, opposite whose home the point impact occurred, said she heard the sound of skidding tires and ran out on her porch.
The women said she did not see the accident but saw the child lying in the street.
An Americas Ambulance took the victim to the hospital where the coroner released the body to the Dornsife funeral home. Sgt. Sprinkle said that young Bostian was playing with an Aurand boy who had crossed Market Street and was preparing to return to the south side when the victim ran out from along side a hedge into the street.
The child's distraught mother was placed under the care of a physician as a result of the tragedy. Richard Bostain Jr. was born in Sunbury July 9, 1955 a son of Richard Joseph and Shirly Mae Shultz Bostian. His age was four years.
