The Osman and Shultz family

This is the story of my German Ancestors my maternal grandmothers people.

The OSMAN came from Neuterhausen, Western Germany according to a ship list.

A Cathar ASSMANN probably her full name was Anne Catherine at the age of 24 on the date of October 6, 1851 gives birth to Georg ASSMANN'S son Johanes later known as John OSSMAN.
She gives Georg another son Heinrich 5 years later on September 1, 1855,
they have a daughter An Martha on the date of May 1859 she later known as Martha.
and one more son Frederick "Fred" on the date of May 1863.

In the year of 1866 on April 16 Catharine OSMAN age 43 listed as Cathar ASSMANN along with about 353 passengers and ship mates,
arrived from the port of Bremen Germany to New York.
On the date of March 20, just a few weeks before on March 20 her husband Georg at the age of 39 died at sea and was thrown over board.

It could of taken 2 weeks to 4 weeks to sail across the ocean.

The family story is that George Osman was robbed and the new widow was left with no money.
She arrived in New York with 4 children to care for and the family story is she made aprons to sell on the streets.
With her was sons Johanes age 14,
Heinrich age 11,
Frederich age 2
and one daughter An Martha age 7.

At some time after their arrival Catharine marries again to John Rush who was 18 years younger than she was.
He was from Wurttemberg Germany.
He was a Coal Miner he worked for the Cameron mines in Coal Twp Shamokin PA.

On June 7 1880 John Rush lives with Catherine and her four children.
On September 10, 1880 he died in a fatal mine accident a "fall of top coal".
He was only 39 years old.

Again Catherine Osman is a widow.

On the date of December 4, 1880 her daughter Anne Martha married Hermon Julius Heller of Germnay in Northumberland CO PA

In the summer of the year 1880 her son Henry Alexander Osman marries the young widow of John Q Adams, Sarah Emma Adams who was born in Paxinos also known as Irish Valley in Northumberland CO PA on January 7, 1859.

Sarah who was often called Emma, already has a son Harry L Adams who is 3 years old.

Henry Osman along with his brother John and Fred are coal miners.

In August of the year 1881 Anna Martha Heller gives birth to her daughter Anna Catherine who she names after her mother. She is known as Catherine. She never marries.

On May 22, 1882 Anna Martha Osman was born to Henry and Sarah Osman.
She was named after her Aunt Anna Martha sister of Henry Osman.

Anna Martha Heller sister of Henry gave birth to a son Federick W Heller in May 1883

The next year in the fall on October 28,1883 Sarah Osman gave Henry Osman another daughter Florence nick named Flora .

In 1884 the family of Fred and John Osman and Martha Heller lived at at 210 West Mulberry Street Coal TWP Shamokin Northumberland CO PA.
Henry Osman also lives on Mulberry Street.

Anna Martha Heller sister of Henry gave birth to a son John H Heller in May 1853.

The 3 rd daughter of Sarah and Henry Osman was born Bertha E Osman she came in the winter on January 18, 1886.

Anna Martha Heller sister of Henry gave birth to a daugther Emma Heller in June 1887.

A fourth daughter was born to Sarah and Henry Osman on May 1,1888, Clara Osman and she was named after Clara E Moyer sister of Sarah Emma Osman.

That same summer on July 10,1888 Henry Osmans mother,
Catherine Osman Rush at the age of 65 dies of dropsy, and she was buried in the Old Shamokin grave yard along with John Rush.

Anna Martha Heller sister of Henry gave birth to a son Frances Heller in June 1889.

After Catherine Osman Rush's death in the year 1889 all her children and grandchildren are still living on Mulberry St Coal Twp. Shamokin PA.

The spring of 1890 two of Henry Osmans daughters die,
Bertha dies on April 7, 1890 at the age of 4 and Clara dies on the date of April 8, 1890 at the age of 2.

My great grandfather Harvey Henry Osman comes into the world on the date of
February 27, 1891.

Anna Martha Heller sister of Henry gave birth to a son Edward L Heller in November 1891.

Sarah and Henry Osman's daughter Verna M Osman was born on August 2 1895.

On August 28 ,1895 Sarah Emma Moyer Osman's mother Catharine A Cherry Moyer, at the age of 69 dies and was buried in the Summit Cemetery in Paxinos Northumberland county PA.

On January 2, 1896 Sarah Osman in court releases her son Harry L Adams to her father David Moyer who gives her the sum of $130.00 from her first husbands estate John Q Adams ifs she signs over her guardian ship forever of Harry Adams to her father David Moyer.

On the date of September 4, 1897 her father David H MOYER dies and is buried next to his wife Catharine A Cherry Osman.

Sarah Emma Osman lives birth to
George H Osman was born on September 6,1897 and he dies an infant on October 18, 1897.

Fred Osman brother of Henry A Osman now 34 years old gets married in the year 1897 and soon after moves to Columbia CO PA.

Sarah Emma Osman has another daughter Elva Gertrude on September 30, 1898.

Anna Martha Heller sister of Henry Osman gave birth to a son Edward Heller in September 1898.

Anna Martha Osman marries Edward Feece in the year 1899 and lives with the family.

Flora Osman marries George "Peffer" Haines in the year 1900.

On June 12 1900 they all live at 846 Mulberry ST, Coal Township Garfeild Precinct, Northumberland CO PA

Anna M Feece loses her first child the year of 1900.

On September 10, 1900 the last son Raymond William Osman is born to Sarah Emma and Henry A Osman. By this year 1900 Sarah Osman had given birth to 10 children and 5 died.

November 22, 1900 John Ossman brother of Henry A Osman dies at the age of 49 and he is buried in the old Shamokin Cemetery.

Anna Martha Feece gives birth again on February 21, 1901 to her first son Clarence who is known as Hook later in life.

Anna Martha Heller sister of Henry Osman gave birth to her last daughter Anna Martha in the year 1902. By this year she had given birth to 10 children and two had died.

About the year 1902 Anna Martha Heller and her family moved away from Mulberry Street Coal TWP to Altoona in Blair CO.
And Anna Martha and Edward Feece move into the Heller home.

Sarah Osman loses a child in the year of 1903.

On December 4 ,1904 Anna M Feece gives birth to another son Melvin M Feece.

In the year 1905 Flora Haines gives birth to her only child Sally Haines.

And on August 2, 1909 Flora Haines dies.

At the age of 47 Sarah Emma Osman she gives birth to one last daughter Elsie V who was born on May 23, 1906.
Sarah Emma OSMAN gave birth to 13 children by the time she was 47 years old and 7 of them had died.
She was an active member of the Shepherds of Bethlehem and the Rebekahs, I.O.O.F. she was also a devout member of Salem Reform church.
She also cooked for extra boarders that lived with them through the years.
One of them being a young man William Moyer who may of been a relative.

On July 15, 1910 Anna M Feece gives birth to her last child Anna Martha and on July 24, 1910 Mrs Anna M Feece dies.

The Feece family live next door and between the Osman family and the Feece family
4 grandchildren have lost a mother.

In 1910 there are 6 children in all under the age of 10 in the Henry A Osman family including his 4 grandchildren.

By 1910 Henry Osman owns the house at 842 West Mulberry St Coal Twp, Shamokin PA.
He is a Foreman in a Coal Mine.

By 1910 Harvey Henry Osman oldest son of Henry A Osman had finsihed grade 7 of school and was working in the coal mines.

A beautiful dark eyed girl lived in the neighbor hood.
She had dark brown eyes and she was very shapely.

Her family was of PA Dutch background and she could converse in PA Dutch as well as English.

As Sadie Carl would walk up the hill to go home, Harvey would try to get a glance of her ankles from under her long skirts.

Sadie Carl also lived on Mulberry Street Coal TWP Shamokin PA.
Sadie May Carl was the daughter of Charles Monroe Carl and Cora Klinger Carl.
When Sadie Carl was 18 years old her mother remarried and Sadie lived in the Emanuel Bixler home with her 6 living siblings and 4 step siblings.
This was not a happy home her step brothers were mean.

Sadie May Carl's father and her older sister died just before her 15 birth date.
She also lost an older brother in childhood.
Sadie Carl was born on April 5, 1892 in Orwin/Tower City, Porter Twp Schuylkill CO PA
Sadie Carl was already working as a weaver in the silk mill by the year 1910.

On the date of August 17, 1912 Henry Harvey Osman at the age of 21 married Sadie May Carl.
She wore a pastel colored gown.
That night a group came to the house making noise and took Henry Osman off in a wheel barrel.
They provided treats to the party makers.

The newly married couple also lived on Mulberry Street in Shamokin.

On December 23 of that year the first son was born Lawrence Henry Osman.
Two years later my maternal grandmother was born Alma Leona Osman on March 23, 1914.
They moved to Pine Street Shamokin in 1914.
Elva Elizabeth Osman was born on June 15, 1916.

On March 1, 1917 Henry A Osman the father of Harvey Osman and our immigrant ancestor died and was buried in the old Shamokin cemetery.

Sadie May Osman gave birth to Harvey Leroy Osman on April 17, 1918.

On August 16, 1819 Herman Julius Heller dies in Altoona Blair CO PA leaving
Anna Martha Osman Heller a widow at the age of 60 with 7 childern at home the youngest one 8 years old .

In 1918 the family Harvey Osman family moved to South Fourth Street Sunbury PA.
The bathroom or out house was in the bottom of the back yard.
They had neighbors who's girls would run down through the yard to the out house and they would start to throw up their dress's before they got to the door of the out house and if Harvey was looking out a window Sadie would scold him for looking.

In Sunbury Harvey Henry Osman got a job working on the Steam trains as a freight conductor.

He would some times get off the train in Shamokin to visit with his mother Sarah Emma Osman and family.

Twin boys were born to Sadie Osman on the date of December 24, 1920.
They named these boys Edward Raymond and Melvin "Mose" Charles Osman.

These boys slept in the same bed with their oldest sister Alma and one would sleep on one side of her and the other slept on the other side of her.
One of them would twist Alma's hair to fall asleep.

Cora Elizabeth Osman was born on April 30 1923 and she looked very much like her mother Sadie.

Darvin Donald Osman was born on September 2, 1925

On December 7 1923 Sarah Emma Moyer Osman died at 10:15 in the morning.
She had been sick for a while but her death was unexpected she died of heart failure.
And was buried in the Shamokin Cemetery.

Sadie's oldest boy Lawrence got Polio.
He would ride in a wagon and Alma would pull him.

Sadie Osman had more children

On September 23, 1927 Anna Martha Osman Heller died in Altoona Blair CO PA and she is buried next to her husband .

On June 1, 1928 June May Osman was born.
On April 5 , 1930 Pearl Sylvia Osman was born.

Around that time they moved into a 3 bedroom home on 342 Vine Street Sunbury .

Sadie's mother Cora Carl Bixler left and divorced Emanuel Bixler and would come to visit Sadie for weeks at a time.

The rail way tracks went by the back of the house and Harvey Osman would toot the horn of the coal powered Steam Engine and wave at his children as he road by.

By 1930 Sadie's older children were working in the H.D. Bob shirt manufacturing factory.
Lawrence was a packer .
Alma and Elva were ironing shirts.

Sadie Osman had 2 more boys.

Raymond Glenn Osman Febuary 6, 1932
Lloyd Cannon Osman August 1, 1934.
Sadie nursed her last child until he was about 5 years old.

Lawrence Osman was the first to leave the nest and he got eloped to Hagerstown Maryland with Pauline A Haas on October 31, 1931

Alma L Osman went to a square dance with her mother and father at the hose house were she would takes turns dancing with her mother and father since they would not dance together.
There she first danced with John "Jack" Shultz he was born in Ashland PA on may 30, 1908 son of a coal miner .
On a cold wet winter day March 26, 1932 Alma L Osman married John Peter Schultz who changed his name to just John J Shultz.

John Shultz gave Alma a cedar chest and she filled it with carnival glass that John would win for her a the local carnivals.
Her youngest siblings would get into the cedar chest and play with her gifts so very little of it remained unbroken by the time she got married.

Alma Osman wore a coat over her long pastel gown and rubber boots over her slippers because it had snowed and the snow was melting all over the roads and side walks.

They walked to the Sunbury court house to be married and the newly married couple went to stay at the home of John William and Jeanette Schultz parent's of John Shultz on South River Rd Sunbury.
Alma changed into John Shultz PJ's and went to bed in Johns bedroom and John went out drinking.

John Shultz worked at the Ice plant.

They moved into there own place on Race Street and on August 14, 1932
Janette Jacqueline Shultz was born.
She was a light fair blond baby.
She was born at home and given her first bath by her father.

When a child was expected some one would go for the Dr or if a phone was in the house the Dr would be called and another women would stand out side and wave the Dr down when he came close to the home.

Doris Louise Shultz was born on April 4 1934 unlike her sister she was a had dark hair and completion.

John Harvey Shultz was born on July 22, 1935.

March 18, 1936 there was a big flood in Sunbury and the family took pails of food to carry and walked down the rail road tracks to Shamokin.

The Shultz family lived at 209 North Fourth Street Sunbury PA.
The house is no longer there is was torn down.

My mother Shirly Mae Shultz was born at home on January 5, 1937.
She had very dark hair and of dark compextion.

Ronald Norvin was born on April 18, 1938.
Jane Marie was born on March 19, 1940.

Winter of 1941 both parents of John Shultz died.
His mother Jeanette "Nettie" Rockwell Schultz died after being sick for a year at the ate of 64 .
Jeanette Rockwell was the daughter of Warren Calvin Rockwell and Mary Ann Maxey.
Just 10 days after Jeanette died her husband,
John William Schultz died of a heart attack on December 9, 1941.
They both were buried in the William Penn's Cemetery on Spruce and Front street in Sunbury PA.

Alma Shultz gave birth to her 5 th daughter Elanie Leona on February 28, 1943

World War 2 and on July 6 1944 Alma Shultz's brother Harvey Leroy Osman was killed in action in France.

The Shultz family was living at 316 North Fourth Street Sunbury PA

In the year 1951 Alma's Shultz oldest daughter Janette got married.

Alma Shultz gave birth to her last daughter Deborah Diane, she was the only child born in the hospital on September 5, 1951.

Alma Shultz gave birth to 8 children by the age of 37.

May 2004 I am standing in front of my maternal great great grandfathers home.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's .
Both house were Osman homes.
The one on my left being Henry A Osman and the one on my right being
Anna Martha "nee" Osman Heller's home sister of Henry A Osman.
